Hakkasan's Hip-Hop Reboot Is Quietly Becoming the Strip's Best Guest List

MGM Grand's 80,000 square foot nightclub has pivoted hard into hip-hop and R&B, and its August calendar (French Montana, DJ Pauly D, Murda Beatz, OHGEESY) shows the bet is paying off.

A Different Sound at MGM Grand

Hakkasan has spent over a decade as one of the Strip's marquee EDM temples, but walk into the 80,000 square foot club on a Wednesday this month and you will hear something else entirely. Resident DJ Franzen is spinning Jodeci, Usher and Mariah Carey for a crowd that is actually dancing instead of just filming, and the room feels like a different club than the one hosting techno headliners two nights later.

That contrast is the point. Hakkasan's team began steering programming toward hip-hop and R&B earlier this year, and the pivot got its loudest signal in February when the club hosted Cardi B's official tour afterparty. Since then, culture-forward bookings have become a regular fixture across the club's two dance floors and the more intimate Ling Ling Room.

Filling a Gap Left on the Strip

Timing matters here. Drai's Nightclub and Beachclub, long the Strip's default hip-hop and R&B destination from its rooftop perch at the Cromwell, scaled back significantly in late 2025 as the property transitioned into the Vanderpump Hotel, with the operation moving to a smaller basement footprint and hundreds of positions eliminated in the process.

That left an opening for a genre that had few dedicated Strip homes at nightclub scale, and Hakkasan's booking team appears to be stepping into it. Insiders describe the R&Bae concept as a deliberate answer to demand that had nowhere else to go once the old rooftop scene wound down.

August's Confirmed Lineup

The month is stacked. French Montana headlines August 8, DJ Pauly D takes the booth August 13, Murda Beatz plays August 21 and OHGEESY closes out the run on August 22. Between those dates, R&Bae Wednesdays run every single week, on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th, giving guest list regulars a reliable midweek option alongside the bigger Friday and Saturday productions.

For a club that built its name on four-on-the-floor headliners, stacking this many hip-hop and R&B names into one calendar month is a real departure, and it suggests management sees enough demand to keep the format going well past summer.

Meet the Resident Driving It

DJ Franzen is the connective tissue across all of it, spinning the weekly R&Bae Wednesdays and helping shape the broader booking direction. He has described the appeal in simple terms, saying his favorite part is that "people dance, you can tell it's a different vibe" compared to a typical Strip set built around bottle sparklers and phone cameras.

That kind of engaged crowd is exactly what venues chase when a format is working, and it is a big reason the club keeps adding dates rather than treating R&Bae as a one-off experiment.
